While my paintings are undeniably figurative, characteristics of abstract art can be found in them. I break the illusion of perspective with two-dimensional compositions. I simplify the variations in value to dark and light surfaces, where depth is almost completely absent. Ultimately it is about portraying a three-dimensional space as a two-dimensional surface.

"Anu Kauhaniemi paints urban surroundings and the world of young adults in a way that puts the spectator in the position of an observer. The interiors look familiar, yet they remain anonymous. She has the capability of depicting natural light – its reflections and shadows – beautifully. Her brush strokes are vacant and elegant. The blacks and whites are both nuanced and expressive."
